Assignments one, go to the software program on your laptop labeled Paint and open the Australia map file. Here you will find a blank map of Australia and New Zealand.
You will use this program to create three maps of Australia and New Zealand. A map of Australia’s Physical Features, use page # 749, in your text book and identify the following list of features: Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Coral Sea, Tasman Sea, Timor Sea, Arafura Sea, Great Australian Bight, Great Sandy Desert, Darlin Range, Gibson Desert, Great Victoria Desert, Macdonnell Ranges, Great Artesian Basin, Great Dividing Range, Southern Alps, Cook Strait, Bass Strait, Mt. Kosciuszko, Darling River, Murray River, Lake Eyre, Great Barrier Reef, Tropic of Capricorn, and Nullarbor Plain. Save this file on your lap top as Australia Physical Map
Next use page # 756 in your text book and label Australia and New Zealand’s population in each area similar to the map on page 176. Use the coloring tool to establish populations per square mile for uninhabited, under 2, 2-60, 60-125,125-250, and Over 250. Also identify cites with 1,000,000 to 5,000,000 people. Save this map on your laptop as Australia Population Map.
Create the third and final map identifying and labeling Australia and New Zealand’s economic activities indicated by different colors, or importing clip art the represents the activity in each region. Be sure to include 15 different economic activities. To help you with this map use page755 in your text book. Save this map as Australia Economic Activity.
Be sure to include a map key and title with each map.
Post all three of your maps on the class Wiki with your name.
Examine and identify similarities and differences in all the maps posted by your classmates on the Wiki.
Using everyone’s maps Answer the following question: How does Australia’s physical and environmental geography effects its population and economy?
Post your answer as a paragraph on the class wiki.
Be sure to evaluate your work based on the rubric posted on the class Wiki. This is how you will be graded.

Australia Maps 3/11/12
My class and I have been learning about Australia and we had to make three different maps:
Map #1 - Australia Physical Map
Map #2 - Economic Activity
Map #3 – Population Density
A pattern I’ve seen is that each map has a map key. Each map also includes New Zealand.
The maps have specific regions colored and when you see map #3, you will notice that the grey which is inhabitable and on map #2 the pink area has no physical activity, also on map #1 the pink region from map #2 and the grey region from map #3 are in the area that is orange from map #1, which is a desert.
While making these maps I thought to myself “hey I am doing better than I thought.” And I really think I am. I put a lot of effort into making these maps. I made sure that it looked really good, I might have gone overboard with map #2 on the detailing but I think it will be just fine.
How does Australia’s physical and environmental geography effect its population and economy? Well since it being a livable place that is so far down the southern hemisphere it get really hot and I mean REALLY HOT.
Through the maps I have seen almost half of Australia is inhabitable and not a lot of economic activity going on in the inhabitable area, also Australia is home to the most poisonous animals on earth. Less people would want to live in Australia for these reasons, so that means less people will move there which will keep its population at an average and since the outback (desert regions) are inhabitable there will be less economic activity and since it being so hot it would be hard to keep a station (sheep and cattle ranch) in good shape.
In other countries their economic system would fall but Australia’s economy has not fallen yet because they export a lot of goods to various countries and Australia’s economy depends on the country their exports go to’s economy, if that countries economy is bad it will do some damage on Australia’s economy.
Australia is an amazing place to learn about it is full of history and animals that you don’t usually see in other countries. If you love the hot this would be a good vacation to take someday but if you don’t like the heat then just don’t go there.

Economic Activity
I have made three maps and I am comparing them. There are similar designs on the maps. They are colorful they each have a certain part that looks the same. I think I did pretty well. I did mess up on my first map. To compare the first map against population and activity I would say that were there is a desert there is dryness everywhere around it. The economic would be where there are deserts and plains there would be no jobs. Also ranching really has a lot of difference from the other two because they have plenty of people farming. They got a lot of jobs and other of people could work for people and get paid. My conclusion is that everywhere around you there is land, plains, deserts, and jobs. The environment sometimes might effect the population and make people go away so that no one is there anymore.I compared my maps with Eli and Susannah ours weren’t that similar but we did have a lot of the same colors Susie and Eli both had different map keys then me and that’s it.
Eli's maps
In Mrs. Christian’s class, we have been making maps of Australia on the computer. Most of my maps use the same colors, which makes them look cool. Samuel and Susie’s maps stick out to me because they are very good. I think I did pretty well on my maps because they are neat & tidy. Australia’s physical geography affects its population because there is not a whole lot of vegetation, which means there is little shade, which makes it very hot. This makes it harder to live there. It also is very good for solar power. That concludes my Maps of Australia project.
susannahs maps
In this class we are making maps of Australia and this my point of view on them. A couple of the patterns that I see are that the uninhabited area has little or no activity and no people live there. Because all it is, is a big desert. Also the area with a lot of activity has a lot of people. When I was looking at my classmates maps I noticed a lot of differences in my maps and there’s. They arranged there stuff on the maps differently and chose different ways to make the map keys. None of the maps really stuck out to me because a lot of them were very alike. This is what I think about them.
BETH'S MAPS
BETH'S ESSAY This past month or so ,my classmates and I have been doing a map project on Australia. We each had to make three maps, physical, economic ,and population density. There is some simalitarys on my maps, for instance they are all on Australia and all have girly colors on them. It was not very hard to do all of the maps; in fact they all were easy. Almost everyone else’s maps were colored all over like mine. Although some peoples maps were colored only in a certain spot. To all those social studies teachers out there I would recommend this project if you are teaching about Australia. I thought it was fun to do. When we were done with the maps we posted them on Mrs.Christan’s wiki page, which I thought was really neat. All and all the whole project was really, really FUN. Of course we had to learn about Australia first and that was fun too!
Alison's Maps
Alison’s Essay My seventh grade geography class is working on Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania. We were to create three different maps of their population, economic resources, and the physical parts. All of the three maps have patterns towards each other. In the three maps I had made, I noticed that on the Population Density Map where the gray area is found there aren’t any people who live there. This is because if you look at the Economic Map it is in the same area where there is little and there is no activity. When looking at the Physical Map I saw that there is no activity because that area is covered with deserts. In the Economic Map it shows that Australia’s people must have raised livestock (such as sheep and lamb), farming and commercial ranching on the outer part of Australia. If you look on the Physical Map the outer parts are within different ranges, the Nullarbor Plain and the Great Artesian Basin. On the Population Density Map it says there is to be about less than 2 sq. mi or less than 1 sq. km per people of the outer ranges of Australia. I think I did a pretty good job creating the three maps. It took a lot of patience, steadiness, hard work and thinking to do the three maps. I had gotten behind my fellow classmates, but I caught up with them. It did take me awhile but I put a lot of effort in it to get my maps done. We were asked to answer this question. How does Australia’s physical and environmental geography effect its population and economy? Well, to know why there is less population or more population in a specific area and its economic resources you would need to use the physical map to find out what’s among that area. Like I’ve noticed, there isn’t any population in the gray area because the Economic Map had shown that there was little or no activity. All of this rounds up to the Physical Map because there are deserts among that area. So the physical helps you to understand why there is more or less population and the economic resources. Everything basically rounds up to the physical.

Stacy’s essay I am Stacy Cole and I want to talk about what I did the past few weeks. My class was studying the past three weeks. We were studying three countries called Australia, New Zealand, and Tasmania. What we were doing was creating three maps of these three countries, let me share these maps with you. The first map that I did was called the physical map. What I had to do with it is label the land elevation. Then I had to label the land forms. The deserts are yellow; the ranges are yellow, orange, and red. The rivers and the oceans are blue; the lakes are light blue; the mountains are black: and the basins are green. The next map is my economic map. I worked about two days on this map. What we had to do is label all of the resources. Then we had to make a map key. The map key had green as commercial farming; yellow is ranching; brown is hunting and gathering; orange is the manufacturing area; and light purple is little or no activity. The next thing I had to do is label all the resources. Silver is a grey color; fishing is a brown color; gold is yellow with a black outline; uranium is a red color; sheep is black with littlewhitedots; cattle is brown with whitedots; wheat is a nasty green color; coal is black; and tin is dark purple. The next and last map is my population density map. And let me take the last few minutes to talk about it. A grayish color is uninhabited. Yellow means that it’s under to square miles or 1 square kilometer. Orange is 2-60 square miles or 1-25 square kilometers. Dark orange is 60-125 or 25-50. light red means 125-150 square miles or 50-100 square kilometers. And last is red witch means over 250 square miles or over 100 square kilometers. So now I would like to tell you which map I like best. I liked the physical map the best because the deserts look like sand. I think I did well on this assignment. This has been my map assignment I hoped you liked my presentation.
ANASTASIA'S MAPS
We have been learning about Australia and our teacher, Mrs. Christian thought about an idea of us working on these maps and learning how to label them. I can find many patterns such as all three maps have not many people where the desserts are. On the population density, the gray part is labeled uninhabited and on the economic activity , the pink part is labeled little to no activity and on the physical map ,in the spot where the other colors where it is all
